Fleet Foxes at the Paramount Theatre

I intentionally distanced myself from Fleet Foxes the past year because I was afraid I would play their entire-very-brief catalog into oblivion and spoil the magic. With the exception of one song, tonight’s show was my first time hearing stuff from their latest album.

I love the new songs. I love the old songs. The band seemed psyched but comfortable to be home, they were playful and relaxed over the entire set. And part of me was relieved and excited at their musicianship. From the vantage of my seat in the mezzanine, there was no unevenness whatsoever on the harmonies that exploded them to notoriety (and I don’t mean to shortchange them when I say that, they’re much more as a band than just heavenly four part harmonies). I’m sure the studio version of the new album sounds stupendous, but I feel I have no choice but to leave the band in September for awhile so I can keep this night at the forefront when I think of Fleet Foxes. The album will make a good rainy-day present to myself sometime in November…….
